Dental Crown

        Affordable Dental crown in Melbourne

Dental crown explained

A dental crown is an artificial cover for an existing tooth which has been damaged by a large cavity or decay or is badly chipped or broken. A crown covers the tooth, increasing tooth strength and improving its appearance.

Crowns are generally made from porcelain or a mixture of porcelain and metal.

Dental crown procedure

Placement of a dental crown generally takes three appointments:

  • Appointment 1: This appointment is generally quite long – about two hours.
    • The dentist numbs your tooth and prepares it for the crown.
    • The dentist takes an impression of your teeth.
    • The dentist selects the colour for your crown so that it matches your remaining teeth.
    • A temporary crown is installed.
    • After your appointment, the dentist carefully shapes the cast for your crown. This is then sent to the technician for your crown to be custom-made.
  • Appointment 2:
    • The temporary crown is removed and the permanent crown fitted.
  • Appointment 3:
    • The crown is rechecked.

Making the crown

The dentist takes a lot of care to ensure that the crown matches your other teeth in shape, size and colour. The shaping process alone is time consuming but well worth the time it takes to ensure that the shape is correct. Once the dentist has completed the shaping and the colour and size matching, the impression is sent to our local technical lab to have your crown custom-made.

Our crowns are not sourced in bulk, or from overseas. They are all custom-made, right here in Melbourne, by our fully trained technicians. All of our technicians have had three or four years of training in Dental Technology.

Dental crown – pain

There is no pain involved in the fitting of a dental crown, as the dentist will use local anaesthetic to numb the tooth before the work begins.

FAQs

How long do dental crowns last?

A properly constructed, well fitted crown should last 10 to 15 years, depending on how much wear and tear it suffers and how well you maintain good oral hygiene.

Can I have a dental crown on my front teeth?

Yes, a crown can be fitted to any tooth that is chipped, broken, decayed or discoloured. The crown will be custom-made to match your other teeth in colour, size and shape, so that it will look just like a natural tooth.

How many appointments will it take to fit a dental crown?

It generally takes three appointments to fit a dental crown. At the first appointment, your tooth is prepared for the crown and a temporary crown is fitted. At the second appointment, the custom-made permanent crown is fitted. The final appointment is a check-up to ensure that everything is going well.

Can I still eat normally with a dental crown?

Yes, a dental crown will allow you to eat normally. However, to ensure that your crown lasts as long as possible, you should not use your teeth to bite other things (e.g. finger nails, string, plastic) or use them to take the lid off a beer bottle.

Do you do same-day crowns?

No. There is no research evidence supporting same-day crowns and at Smile Avenue we place our trust in evidence-based procedures.

A same-day crown would mean that you are getting a ready-made crown, whereas our crowns are all custom-made, right here in Melbourne. A same-day crown may also mean that the dentist needs to work quickly, and we believe a good crown custom made and fitted with perfection would require more time.

We won’t compromise your health; we use the highest quality, locally sourced crowns. And we won’t rush your treatment; we pride ourselves in doing a job once and do it properly.
